Saica Group, a global leader in recycled paper and packaging solutions, has completed the acquisition of the paper and corrugated board recovery business of FCC Ámbito, a subsidiary of FCC enviro. The transaction, executed through Saica Natur (the group’s environmental services arm), significantly expands the company's circular economy footprint across the Iberian Peninsula.

The deal encompasses seven key operational facilities located in Madrid, Cáceres, Valladolid, Asturias, Vizcaya, León, and Toledo. Beyond paper and cardboard, the acquisition includes the management of other non-hazardous industrial and commercial waste streams, ensuring a diversified supply of secondary raw materials for Saica’s manufacturing divisions.

Key Metrics & Strategic Highlights

  1. Financial Impact: The acquired business reported a turnover of €33 million ($38.89 million) in 2024.
  2. Operational Scale: Saica Natur now operates 47 plants across Europe (36 in Spain), with additional facilities in France, Portugal, the UK, and Poland.
  3. Workforce Expansion: The deal incorporates 150+ specialized employees, bringing Saica Natur’s total workforce to over 1,700 people.
  4. Vertical Integration: By securing these assets, Saica Group optimizes its sourcing of recovered paper, reducing reliance on virgin fiber and stabilizing its supply chain for Saica Paper and Saica Pack.

The Industrial Impact of the Acquisition

The acquisition marks a major consolidation in the Spanish recycling sector. By integrating FCC Ámbito’s infrastructure and "recognized prestige," Saica Group not only increases its market share but also sets a new standard for quality control in recovered materials. This move reinforces the "Saica 2025" strategic plan, positioning the company to meet the rising demand for sustainable packaging while exerting greater influence over regional pricing and resource management dynamics.

Tocco Report: Marine Materials 2030

This Tocco Report follows that transformation across five chapters. Part I examines ocean waste and its recycling into new material flows. Part II focuses on algae and their rapidly scaling bio-based chemistry. Part III turns to shells, chitosan, and fish skins as building blocks for biopolymers and leather alternatives. Part IV examines aquaculture as a biomass platform for food, fertilisers, and next-generation materials. Part V closes with the forces of the sea: energy, minerals, and current-driven systems that unlock power densities far beyond solar or wind. Together, these perspectives form a panorama of how ocean industries are scaling from niche experiments to critical infrastructures.
