1. The Patella Crescenda offers a simple and effective way to grow microgreens year-round. Can you explain the design process behind the kit, and how it balances functionality with ease of use?
The design process began with a clear goal: to create a low-threshold tool that makes growing your own fresh greens feel easy, rewarding, and accessible, even for people with no gardening experience. We started by identifying the barriers people face when growing microgreens at home, such as messiness, inconsistent watering, or mold. From there, we worked through many iterations to find a clean, soil-free system that combines practicality with a warm, natural aesthetic. It had to be intuitive to use and pleasant to have on your kitchen counter, something you’d enjoy using every day.

2. The product allows users to grow microgreens without soil. What are the key materials used in the design, and how did you ensure that these materials promote hygienic, soil-free cultivation while being sustainable?
The Patella Crescenda is made from glazed terracotta, recycled glass, and stainless steel, materials we chose deliberately for both function and longevity. The terracotta base provides a stable, natural reservoir, while the stainless steel growth disks are easy to clean, don’t retain moisture, and resist bacterial growth. The absence of soil removes one of the main causes of mold in home-growing setups. These durable materials not only promote hygienic growth, but are also fully recyclable and designed to last for years, in line with our design principles.
3. Microgreens are known for their high nutritional value. How does the Patella Crescenda kit support the healthy growth of these greens, and what considerations were made regarding the water and seed trays to maximize plant health?
We designed the system so the seeds rest just above the water surface, allowing the roots to draw moisture through capillary action without getting the stems or leaves wet. This method keeps the seedlings healthy and mold-free. During germination, the user can slightly raise the water level to keep the seeds moist, then lower it again once sprouting begins. The controlled environment and breathable stainless steel trays help promote even growth and root development, ensuring the microgreens grow strong and nutritious.

4. The kit is designed to be used without the hassle of traditional gardening. Could you walk us through the technical aspects of the vacuum system that controls the water level? How does this system enhance the user experience and support sustainable growth?
At the heart of the Patella Crescenda is a simple yet effective vacuum system. The glass reservoir sits upside-down in the glazed terracotta base, which acts as a water lock. As water is drawn out by the roots and the level drops below the opening of the reservoir, air bubbles rise and allow more water to flow. This self-regulating mechanism ensures a consistent water level without the need for electricity or constant checking. It’s low-tech but very effective, and mirrors natural irrigation techniques, making it both sustainable and user-friendly.

5. Sustainability is a core value of House of Thol. How do you ensure that the materials used in the Patella Crescenda kit align with your sustainability goals, and what steps were taken to minimize the environmental impact of production?
We believe sustainability should be built into the DNA of every product, from material choice to end-of-life. For Patella Crescenda, we chose glazed terracotta and stainless steel because they’re durable, timeless, and don’t require complex recycling systems. The glass reservoir is made from recycled glass, and the product is designed for easy disassembly and cleaning. We produce locally within the EU, reducing transport emissions and ensuring fair working conditions. By designing for longevity and minimizing waste, we aim to create tools that support a more circular lifestyle.
6. You mention that microgreens are a perfect solution for green living with little water and space required. How does the design of the Patella Crescenda contribute to water efficiency, and how does it compare to traditional methods of growing greens at home?
Traditional soil-based growing methods often rely on overwatering or guesswork, which can lead to waste and rot. Patella Crescenda, on the other hand, uses just enough water. Thanks to the closed vacuum system and visible reservoir, you always know exactly when to refill. There’s no soil to hold excess moisture, so the greens only take what they need. Because everything is compact and tidy, it’s ideal for smaller homes or apartments. It’s a gentle step toward self-sufficiency without the commitment of a full garden.

7. The Patella Crescenda promotes a more sustainable lifestyle by making it easy to grow your own food. How do you see products like this influencing consumer behavior and the broader movement towards sustainable living?
We see these kinds of tools as small but powerful gateways to change. When people experience how simple and satisfying it is to grow their own food, even just a handful of sprouts. They often become more aware of where their food comes from, how it’s grown, and how much is wasted. That awareness can spark larger shifts in behavior, from more conscious eating to less reliance on packaged goods. Design can lower the threshold for sustainable habits and make eco-friendly choices feel joyful and rewarding.
8. As a designer, how do you see the future of sustainable kitchen products like the Patella Crescenda? Do you think the trend of home-based, low-waste food production will continue to grow in popularity, and what role do you see your company playing in this shift?
Absolutely. With growing concerns about food systems, climate change, and personal well-being, people are increasingly looking for ways to take back control, starting in their own kitchens. We believe the future lies in low-tech, nature-based solutions that empower people to act, even in small ways. At House of Thol, we’ll continue to design tools that make these lifestyle changes easier and more beautiful, while keeping sustainability and functionality at the core. It’s about creating design that supports a better future, not just for individuals, but for the planet.

9. With microgreens being a great addition to many dishes, do you see the Patella Crescenda kit as part of a larger movement towards more self-sufficient lifestyles? How does this product fit into the broader vision of sustainable living and consumption that House of Thol promotes?
Definitely. Patella Crescenda is a compact, elegant step toward self-sufficiency, one that fits into even the busiest modern lifestyle. It encourages people to reconnect with the food they eat, not through big dramatic changes, but through small, daily actions. This approach fits perfectly with our broader vision: making sustainability accessible, actionable, and beautiful. It’s not about perfection, but about creating the conditions for better choices to flourish. One sprout at a time.
