Swedish Algae Factory is a Sweden-based company that cultivates diatoms to extract Algica, a high-tech silica shell used in personal care products and solar panels. Algica replaces harmful chemicals in personal care products and increases solar panel efficiency. Their circular production process converts emissions into valuable products. Algica is a versatile ingredient used as a moisturizer, cleanser, anti-pollution agent, and SPF booster in personal care products. Their innovation lies in their use of natural resources to create sustainable and effective personal care products. Algica has unique light manipulating properties that can boost Si-solar panel efficiency by at least 4% and Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSC) by up to 36%. Algica reduces the degradation of solar panels over time by blocking UV light. Swedish Algae Factory received the highly selective EU LIFE grant for their project LIFE SUNALGAE, which is the first of its kind to extract and utilize diatom shells at a large scale for solar panel efficiency enhancing applications.
