Description

Kelp Island is a company that offers a unique solution for sustainable building in the construction sector. They have developed Kelpstone, a high-strength structural composite made primarily from seaweed fiber residue. Developed in 2023 in collaboration with the University of British Columbia's Material Engineering Department and BioProducts Institute, Kelpstone has a compression strength of 60MPa, about 3X that of standard concrete at about half the weight. It sequesters carbon, is low-cost, renewable, attractive, and scalable. Kelp Island is using currently Kelpstone to produce decorative coasters and wall tiles. Kelpstone can replace concrete, plastic, high-density fiberboard, wood, and fiberglass in many products and applications. Kelpstone is also be the primary ingredient in SeaBrick, our innovative interlocking brick system. These buoyant bricks can be used for a wide range of purposes, including seaweed farms, offshore power generation platforms, industrial mariculture platforms, floating homes and extensions to cities and islands facing rising ocean levels. By utilizing kelp biomass, SeaBrick aims to support the marine sector in its journey towards decarbonization and contribute to a more sustainable future.
